#Mentorship and the recognition of #tradition and #lineage are how we grow into the future. Rule #1 of this #artlife is stay humble and feed the seeds. Just because you’re not familiar with an idea or style of working, or feel like you’re the only one out here, does not mean that it’s a tradition that doesn’t exist. #KnowYourHistory #youarenotalone #Respect #fortheculture

Last week, #MichaelBJordan sat down with the @NYTimes alongside #DenzelWashington where they discussed creating new opportunities for people of color. At the beginning of the discussion, Jordan had began to reflect on the time film critics began calling him a young #DenzelWashington after his performance in #FruitvaleStation.

“When someone says you’re like your idol,” Jordan said, “It’s like: ‘Really? You see that in me?’ I’d only done that one movie. But then I started using it as motivation,” he said. “I wanted to pop up on Denzel’s radar. He’s the OG. If I could get recognition from him, I know I’m going down the right path, you know?” That’s when Washington chimed in with, “And here we are, Mike! Looks like it’s working out already!”

Later, the men talked about creating opportunities for people of color and Washington explained that he is in the business of serving young people of color who want in the film industry. He said that he wants to see more people win, so he’s passing the baton!

“The way I see it, I’m in the service business now. I’m here to serve God, my family and young people of color in our business,” Washington said. He later added, “That’s why I’m here! That’s why I’m still in the race. And I’m passing the baton. What a lot of people don’t know is: When you pass the baton, you keep—(View more at TheShadeRoom.Com!) 📸: @gettyimages

This one really hits close to home. Yesterday, Palestinian journalist Yaser Murtaja was shot and killed by Israeli snipers perched on a hilltop on Gaza’s border. He was wearing a vest clearly marked PRESS, but that didn’t matter. Yaser was covering ongoing protests taking place in Gaza, where millions of Palestinians live in what’s called “the largest open air prison.” Israel doesn’t allow anyone out of the tiny territory and maintains an air, land and sea blockade. The suffering there is unreal. In his funeral procession, Yaser was covered with a Palestinian flag, and his PRESS vest. 😢

At least 23 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza and more than 1,500 others wounded during the Great March of Return, a six-week demonstration and sit-in which started last Friday to mark Palestine Land Day and is calling for the implementation of the Right of Return.

Today is the 44rd anniversary of the American Indian Movement’s (AIM) takeover of Wounded Knee. “At the behest of some elderly women of the Oglala Sioux Civil Rights Organization (OSCRO), AIM assisted in taking control of a local church and trading post near the historic Wounded Knee Massacre Site.

The 71 day siege became the largest U.S. based military operation since the Civil War, according to U.S. Pentagon reports. The U.S. Marshals Service refers to this event as “… the longest civil disorder in the history of the Marshals Service.

What was viewed as a “civil disorder” by the federal government, translated into an awakening for indigenous peoples across Turtle Island. Through the efforts of OSCRO and AIM, many Tribes found their voice to demand better living conditions, better health care and education for their children.” - Natalie Hand Lakota Times Correspondent.
